Please explain the different Fitting Codes

English made Men’s shoes (and boots) are generally made in fittings E, F and G. These can be classified simplistically as follows:

E=  Narrow 
F=  Medium
G=  Wide 

(sometimes known as 5 fitting)
(sometimes known as 6 fitting)
(sometimes known as 7 fitting)

 

Between fittings in the same size there is approximately 1/4" difference in girth measurement.

Although there is no absolute standard for fittings, there is a table of measurements and we believe our shoes are made as near as it is possible to get to that "standard" as they have been for over 130 years.

The bulk of our styles are made in F fitting, as statistics show that worldwide this is the most appropriate fitting for a majority of males, but we also offer a good selection of G fitting shoes.

Getting the right size matters — especially in leather, where a well-fitted shoe softens to your foot over time. This guide will help you find your size whether you're new to a brand, shopping across UK/EU/US sizing, or unsure how to measure.

How to measure your feet

For the most accurate fit, measure both feet at the end of the day — feet swell slightly as the day goes on, and most people have one foot fractionally larger than the other. Always size to the larger foot.

What you'll need

A piece of A4 paper, a pencil, a ruler or tape measure (in centimetres), and the socks you'd typically wear with the shoes.

Step-by-step

  1. Place the paper on a hard floor against a wall.
  2. Stand on the paper with your heel touching the wall, wearing your usual socks.
  3. Mark the longest part of your foot (usually the big toe) on the paper.
  4. Step off and measure the distance from the edge of the paper to the mark in centimetres.
  5. Repeat for the other foot. Use the larger measurement.
  6. Match your measurement to the foot length column in the tables below.
Tip Measuring while seated produces inaccurate results — your foot lengthens slightly when bearing weight. Always measure standing.

A note on women's US sizing Some American brands run a half-size differently (e.g. UK 5 = US 7 or US 7.5 depending on brand). When in doubt, go by the foot-length measurement in centimetres — it's brand-agnostic.

Width fittings explained

Length is only half of fit — width matters just as much, especially in leather styles where a too-narrow shoe will pinch and a too-wide one will slip at the heel.

UK shoes use letter codes for width. The most common fittings are:

Code Fitting Best for
D Narrow Slim feet, women's classic styles
E Standard / medium Most men, regular-fit women's
F Wide Standard men's wide, women's wide
G Extra wide Men's wide, bunions or high insteps
H Extra extra wide Significant width needs, swelling, orthotics

Brand-specific sizing notes

Even with conversion tables, some brands run slightly large or small relative to standard UK sizing. Here's what we've learned from customers and returns:

Brands that run true to size

Most heritage British and European brands fit accurately to your UK size. If your measured foot length matches the table, order your standard UK size.

Brands that run slightly large

Some brands fit half a size larger than indicated. If you're between sizes with these brands, consider sizing down half a size — particularly in unlined leather styles.

Brands that run slightly small

Italian-made shoes and some athletic-leaning styles can fit half a size smaller. Size up half a size if you have wider feet or prefer a roomier toe box.

If you're between sizes

If your foot length falls between two sizes in the tables above, here's our general guidance:

  • Leather shoes (Oxfords, brogues, loafers): size down half a size. Quality leather softens and stretches slightly with wear — a snug fit on day one becomes the perfect fit by month one.
  • Suede or fabric shoes: size up half a size. These materials don't stretch significantly, so the fit you have on day one is the fit you'll keep.
  • Boots and Chelsea boots: stay with your true size. Boots have more structure and less room to stretch.
  • If you wear orthotics or thicker socks: size up half a size to accommodate.
